In birds the second finger is theprinciple strut of the wing. If the peterosaur walkedor remained stationary, the fourth finger and with itthe wing, could only turn upward in an extendedinverted V-shape alongside of the animal’s body.Both the ptrosaurs and the birds have hollow bones,a feature that represents a saving in weight. In thebirds, however, these bones are reinforced moremassively by internal struts.3. Although scales typically cover reptiles, thepterosaurs probably had hairy coats. The recentdiscovery of a pterosaur specimen covered in long,dense and relatively thick hair-like fossil material,was the first clear evidence that this reasoning wascorrect. Efforts to explain how the pterosaursbecame air borne have led to suggestion that theylaunced themselves by jumping from cliffts, bydropping from trees, or even by rising into lightwinds from the crests of waves.
